A first-timer can learn a short Bournemouth routine inside one weekly session and leave feeling every inch the performer.

Pick something close-fitting so you can read your shapes in the mirror, with a splash of vintage glamour if the mood takes you. Heels give you that cabaret line, while bare feet suit the floor work — either is fine. A feather boa or a long glove is a lovely extra, but the studio keeps a box of props to borrow.

Never — you keep everything on for the whole hour. Burlesque is the playful craft of the tease: the slow reveal of a glove, a wink over a feather boa, a cheeky bump and grind, not real stripping. Our weekly regulars gather at the town-centre studio on Commercial Road, a couple of minutes from the Triangle and the Old Christchurch Road bars. The room is private and screened off, which suits the cheeky spirit of burlesque, and it draws dancers in from East Cliff, Boscombe, Westbourne and along the seven miles of sand.

Not for a second. Heels lend height and that showgirl silhouette, yet plenty of our dancers stay in bare feet or soft flats, especially through the floor work. Begin in whatever feels steady underfoot, and if you fancy graduating to heels we will build your ankle strength and balance as you go.

It could be exactly what you need. Some of our boldest regulars arrived certain they could never hold an audience. Burlesque gives you a character to slip into and a slow, deliberate way of moving that quietly dissolves self-consciousness, so the confidence usually turns up far sooner than anyone expects.

Expect a swaggering walk and held poses, hip bumps and grinds, melting body rolls and the shimmy, plus chair and floor work loaded with cheek. A feather boa, a satin glove and a fan bring the sparkle, and it all gets built into a compact, glitzy number you finish off with a teasing glance.

The whole art form started on the principle that there is no such thing as a wrong body for the stage, and our adult sessions take in dancers from their late teens right up to their seventies.
